Owen Turns 5

Its official! On July 3, 2012 Owen turned 5 years old! How in the world five years have gone by already is beyond us, but we are so blessed and thankful to have this sweet little boy in our lives.

At his 5yr old check-up the doctor was impressed with how healthy he is and how cooperative he was with all of the tests. He passed his eye exam, making us all laugh when he kept referring to the picture of the umbrella on the eye chart as a mushroom. He also passed his hearing test and did a great job following the directions of the nurse while she performed the test. He stands 42 1/2in tall and weighs 38.6lbs (falling in the 50th percentile for both height and weight), and he was so brave getting a shot and a finger prick blood test to prepare for Kindergarten.

Owen can write all of his letters in uppercase and identify all letters both upper and lower case. He can also identify numbers 0-30 and is starting to learn how to sound out words. Without any help he can spell Owen, Peyton, Love and Pool. He can count to 100 with little help and can also count by 5's with little help. He understands the basic principles of addition and subtraction and can do both easily with any number up to 10. He loves patterns and picks them out everywhere and also loves doing puzzles. He still loves reading and this past year has read through 3 chapter books with daddy, James and the Giant Peach, The Rescuers, and Peter Pan. Owen still loves reading and learning about dinosaurs and outer space and we can already see he has a love for science. He also has a subscription now to Zoo Books which he has really enjoyed. Museums, the zoo and the aquarium are all places he constantly asks to visit and we try to acknowledge those requests as often as we can.

His imagination is amazing and this past year he has really gotten into Transformers and Star Wars. Not only does he play transformers with his transformer toys, but he also pretends to be one himself and can build his own out of almost anything. He has gotten really good with creating awesome airplanes and things with his legos, and for his 5th birthday got many sets of smaller legos. It has been so fun to watch him sit for long periods of time, study the instructions and put the lego sets together.

In school this past year Owen really flourished and far exceeded our expectations. He always had glowing reports from his teachers with few (if any) behavior issues through the year and made many friends. His PALS (Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening) tests came back last fall and this spring with Owen scoring at or above average in all categories. We hope and pray he will continue on this path through the next 12 years of his education :) He just loves to learn, and we hope he can keep that excitement and passion for learning and exploring and imagining as he grows.

Aside from all this Owen still loves to be active and has enjoyed learning t-ball and soccer this year. He runs everywhere and even walked all around Walt Disney World with us for 4 days without complaining. He rides his bike with training wheels and has recently really mastered peddling the bike which had been a very frustrating hurdle for him. This summer in the pool Owen has learned to swim underwater and can swim about 10 feet on his own.

This year Owen became a big brother and over the past 9 months has grown into his role nicely. He is helpful, loving, patient and sympathetic toward his sister and has been understanding and helpful toward us. I adore seeing how he loves and cares for Peyton and I know he will protect her and take care of her always.

Owen, we love you and are so proud of you everyday. You never cease to bring joy and amazement to our lives and we love watching you grow up. We are so thankful and honored God chose us to to be your parents. Happy 5th Birthday Bud!
